Skaters on the Red River Mutual Trail at The Forks can now utilize six new warming huts.

The Forks Chief Executive Officer, Paul Jordan, announced today that the new huts will be moved on to the trail for the public to use early next week.

They will join 2017 winners, Open Border and Greetings from Bubble Beach as well as mainstays from previous years, such as Hygge House, Smokehouse, Skybox, Fir Hut, Apparition, Red Blanket, Windshield, Recycling Words and The Hole Idea.

The list of winners for 2018 includes:

  • David Alberto Arroya Tafolla from Mexico for Golden Bison
  • Camille Bianchi and Ryder Thalheimer from Vancouver for The Trunk
  • Architecture Office b210 from Estonia for Totem

There are also three new ones from invited architects, including:

  • Guy Maddin's Temple of Lost Things
  • University of Manitoba Faculty of Architecture's PONTAGON
  • and MBCI students' Hug Mug

The Warming Huts competition winners, as usual, were chosen by a "blind jury" from an open, international competition. Most of the huts are ready to hit the trail, with the exception being Guy Maddin's "Temple of Lost Things", which is still under construction. His hut consists of several "memory columns" made of ice, supporting a mesh screen where projection art and performances will take place, surrounded by many sculpted ice benches.

Jordan says most warming huts will only be on the trail for four to six weeks, and he expects the trail will last about that long as well. So if you plan on getting out to The Forks for a skate, he says now is the time to do it.

The Forks recieved over 200 submissions for this year's Warming Huts competition.
