A Winnipeg man is dead after driving his vehicle the wrong way on the Perimeter Highway.

Red River North RCMP say they received a report of a vehicle driving eastbound in the westbound lane of the Perimeter Highway near Lagimodiere at around 4:40 a.m. on Thursday.

At the scene, they located a badly damaged pickup truck in the westbound lane.

RCMP say the truck was travelling in the wrong direction when it crossed over the median from the eastbound lanes and then crossed the westbound lanes, colliding with a concrete divider at what appeared to be a high rate of speed.

The driver, a 34-year-old man from Winnipeg, was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
