Children living in women's shelters will receive a special gift this spring break.

Melinda Ives, Easter Baskets for Community Kids campaign coordinator and team leader with Discovery Toys, along with a group of her colleagues, are working around the clock to fill special Easter baskets for kids living in shelters.

Ives says they are specifically supporting women's shelters across Manitoba, as well as the Ronald McDonald House, which they were able to add to their list this year.

The pails are filled with a variety of items including colouring books, crayons, toys, books, oral hygiene kits and shampoo. All of which are donations from family, friends, and local businesses.

Ives says they have received plenty of great feedback from those who are recipients of the baskets.

"For some of the coordinators at the shelters, they will often share with us that they don't receive quality products like this," said Ives. "They are just super excited that the families have the option to be involved in giving their children something when they are in a very tough situation. They are out of their homes and don't often have the financial resources, so it makes a big impact on the families. The kids obviously are super excited. They are the easy ones to please. It is just nice to know that, from some of the families that are in these situations, just the impact it has made."

This year has been an extra special one for those involved in the campaign. A person who was a recipient of a basket within the last year, decided to donate to the group this time round.

"That was a really big impact this year, on us. Just to see that someone who had once needed the services, now turned around and supported it. I think that speaks hugely to the impact of the program.

This year the group will deliver a total of 184 baskets, with more being added each day.

The group plans to work right up until Good Friday.
