Northern Manitoba is in for its first real taste of winter temperatures and it's prompted Environment Canada to issue an extreme cold warning.

While southern Manitoba's mild streak is coming to a close, a return to more seasonal temperatures means a high of -11 today in Winnipeg. It will continue to cool throughout the week in the Red River Valley, and by the start of next week daytime highs of -20 or colder are expected.

For Tadoule Lake in the far north of the province, they will reach a high of just -28 on Wednesday, with a wind chill of -45.

At 5 a.m. the temperature is -34 with a wind chill of -47, and not much relief is in sight.

From Environment Canada

A period of very cold wind chills is expected.

Northwesterly winds and cold arctic air have driven wind chill values down to -45 this morning. The extreme cold may moderate slightly this afternoon, but will return tonight and through the remainder of the week.

Extreme cold puts everyone at risk.

Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.

Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frostbite and hypothermia.
