RCMP have recovered the body of a 12-year-old Winnipeg boy that slipped into the water at Sturgeon Falls over the weekend.

RCMP, with help from the HEART team  located and recovered the boy's body at around 1 a.m. Monday.

At around 11:44 a.m. on Saturday, officers received a report of a possible drowning at Sturgeon Falls.

Witnesses say that a 12-year-old boy from Winnipeg was seen climbing down some rocks when he slipped into the water and was almost immediately swept under the rapids.

A bystander jumped into the water to help the boy but could not safely bring him to shore. 

The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team, along with assistance from Manitoba Conservation Officers, Manitoba Parks staff and the HEART team helped conduct a search.

Whitemouth RCMP continue to investigate.
