Music students will be studying under the hands of someone well versed in traditional Indigenous and Western music.

The music department at Brandon University says Melody McKiver is joining them this fall on a tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor of Composition.

“Melody’s knowledge of traditional Indigenous and Western music, as well as current trends in new music, is going to be a fantastic resource for our students. I think they’re going to enjoy getting to know Melody and learning from the experiences that they have to share," Dean of Music Greg Gatien says in a Friday statement.

McKiver is Anishinaabe and from Treaty 3 in Sioux Lookout, Ontario. They hold a Master of Arts in Ethnomusicology from Memorial University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music from York University. Their work focuses on traditional Anishinaabe composition, blending it with electronics and Western classical music.

“Melody is a rising star in Canadian music, and we are thrilled to have them join us at Brandon University."

McKiver is looking forward to their new position.

“I hope to encourage students to develop their own creative voices while reflecting critically upon the wider social context of our musical works.”

Along with their degrees, McKiver has a number of accomplishments under their belt. This includes being awarded the 2020 Robert Fleming Prize, and composed for a chamber trio at Carnegie Mellon University.
