Malathion may be a thing of the past in the City of Winnipeg's fight to control the mosquito population.

The city says it will use a different product, DeltaGard, if and when it is approved by Health Canada. It's a spray the city says is twice as expensive as malathion but considered less of a health risk and more environmentally friendly.

A series of tests were done in Winnipeg in 2015, the results of which, according to the city, showed DeltaGard to be effective for adult mosquito control using a mid-rate application.

Winnipeg's Insect Control Branch fogs when adult mosquito populations rise to numbers that warrant it. The city projects application to occur between May 14th and October 1st this year.

The city says DeltaGard should be approved by June at the latest.

Malathion has been used for almost three decades in Winnipeg.

The City of Winnipeg uses Permanone (permethrin) for residual treatments.
