John Williams just beat out John Williams for most Academy Award nominations by a living composer.

The legendary composer, whose latest accomplishment is the score for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, has more Oscar nominations than any other living person, a title he first earned in 2016 when he earned his 50th nomination. This morning, he earned his 51st nod (for his original score for The Last Jedi), maintaining his history-making Oscar status.

The 85-year-old Oscar heavyweight has won five statuettes over the last few decades,  for Jaws, Fiddler on the Roof, E.T., Schindler’s List, and the original Star Wars. (Alfred Newman has won the most prizes at 9)  Williams' very first Oscar nod was for Valley of the Dolls in 1968—a cool 50 years ago. Star Wars has remained a key franchise in Williams’s life; he’s scored all seven of the core films, picking up score nods (and the one win) for the first three films as well as Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

He could have made it to 52 this year, but he was not nominated for his score to The Post.

Though Williams is now the most nominated living person in Oscar history, he’s not that far from becoming the most nominated person ever. That title is currently still held by Walt Disney, who was nominated 59 times (and won 22 times).
