In celebration of Canada's 150th birthday, the O Koshetz Choir in collaboration with the Centre for Ukrainian Canadian Studies presents "Vespers: A Contemporary Interpretation Rooted in Tradition", featuring the Manitoba premiere of the music of Roman Hurko. Roman was Sarah Jo's guest in the Diamond Lane Thursday afternoon. Missed it? Watch the video here!

Roman Hurko, Toronto-born composer of Ukrainian descent currently based in New York, is an alumnus of the University of Toronto and the Yale Institute of Sacred Music. He penned this work in 2005 to open the 16th KyivFest International Music Festival, performed in Kyiv's legendary Monastery of the Caves.

Winnipeg is invited to attend the first ever performance of Hurko's Vespers in Manitoba on Saturday, May 13th at St Mary the Protectress Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral (820 Burrows Avenue). The Vespers service, officiated by Fr. Alexander Harkavyj with responses sung by the O Koshetz Choir (Miroslava Paches, director), begins at 4pm; a pre-service lecture about the work will be hosted by the composer in the Parish Hall at 3pm.

Although this event is free, a collection will be taken with 100% of proceeds donated to United Way of Winnipeg's "Help Refugees" campaign. Following the service, all attendees are invited to a reception sponsored by the University of Manitoba's St Andrew's College.
