Community members in St. James are donating to a GoFundMe campaign for a 14-year-old hockey player who is battling brain cancer.

Nicholas Wilkins has been fighting recurrent ependymoma for the past decade and it has become inoperable.

With all treatments in Winnipeg exhausted, Nicholas' family has traveled to Montreal for a clinical trial that may help him.

That travel has already put a financial strain on the family.

Kristyn Hercina is a family friend and started the Go Fund Me page with her husband.

She says the money will be used to cover their travel and living expenses.

"They are out there for the next 12 weeks straight, and then they do get to go home but they still have to go back every two to three weeks for another treatment, and they're there for two to three days each time," says Hercina.

People can donate by searching "Nicholas Wilkins fight" on GoFundMe, or by clicking here.

Hercina says the support of the community has meant a lot to the family.

"We FaceTime with them quite often to be able to talk to them, and everybody's rallying around them, you know, here in Winnipeg, is definitely, you know, bolstering their spirits."

Their goal is to raise $25,000.
