What was meant to be a one-time fundraiser for cancer research has turned into an annual event that many look forward to, and the hope is to make this year the biggest and best race yet.

In the Kick-off to the 19th annual Foodfare WPS Half Marathon, Relay and 5k race hosted at the WPS Headquarters, many prominent people shared some words of excitement for the race coming up and for the cause that people run for.

Since the Marathon’s inception in 2004, this event has raised more than $ 2.5 million for Cancer Research, with an average of 3000 people in attendance each year.

Mayor Scott Gillingham spoke at the media kick-off and spoke on the achievements of the WPS Half Marathon and why continued support should still be shown—to support Cancer Care Research.

"The Foodfare WPS Half Marathon works directly with the Canadian Cancer Society to choose specific research programs to fund with race donations, We know where every donation dollar goes and the impact it has," says Nick Paulet, Race Director.

Dr. Magimairajan Issai Vanan is part of the specialized team conducting concerning brain cancer in children research. He is the lone doctor in Manitoba treating kids with brain tumours, having done this work for 20 years (the last ten years in Manitoba).

While Dr. Vanan and his team will experience many hardships in the research process, they will continue to push through with the help of the WPS Half Marathon, the community and all the funds raised in support.

"The Foodfare WPS Half Marathon works directly with the Canadian Cancer Society to choose specific research programs to fund with race donations, We know where every donation dollar goes and the impact it has," says Nick Paulet, Race Director.

Organizers anticipate reaching capacity shortly, so participants are encouraged to register early. Participants can register online at www.WPShalfmarathon.ca. Regular registration is available until April 27, 2023.

The race will be held on May 7 and start and finish inside Assiniboine Park. There will be starts for the half marathon and 2-person relay and a separate start for the 5K. The event is open to runners and walkers of all skill levels. The course will remain open for 4 hours to allow runners, wheelchair athletes and walkers to participate.
