Bill Frisell's album "When You Wish Upon A Star" is familiar territory (title wise at least) for anyone who loves movie soundtracks, although done in a style that is totally Frisell's.

On his latest recording "When You Wish Upon A Star" guitarist Bill Frisell enlists stellar talent such as singer Petra Haden, the daughter of the late jazz bassist Charlie Haden and violist Eyvind Kang who spent time in his teen years living in Winnipeg. Thomas Morgan on bass and Rudy Royston on drums and percussion round out the group, presenting a superb rhythm section that doesn't get as extensive a workout as you'd expect, but then this album is more about mood than tempo. Frisell is well known for his languid approach to reworking melodies, with occasional forays into dissonance.  This is movie music that leans more towards noir, but there is room for romantic expressionism, especially when Petra Haden is called upon to sing classics such as "Moon River", "When You Wish Upon A Star" and "You Only Live Twice".
