The biennial Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg McLellan Competition for Solo Performance provides advanced Manitoba musicians a generous monetary prize and a celebrated performance opportunity.

Presenting a total purse of $20,000, three finalists perform alongside the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in an always memorable showcase of burgeoning talent.

In the lead up to this year’s event, Classic 107 will introduce listeners to this year’s finalists, beginning with mezzo-soprano Geneva Halverson.

A graduate of the Desautels Faculty of Music at the University of Manitoba, Geneva Halverson is a voice teacher, pianist, and previous winner of the Zita Bernstein Lieder Competition (University of Manitoba) and the Gilbert and Sullivan Trophy (Winnipeg Music Festival).

Hear more about Geneva’s journey as a piano-turned-voice major; honouring their great-grandfather’s operatic legacy; the importance of running when it comes to breath control; and, the frustrations caused by pesky squirrels.

The WMC McLellan Competition final takes place on Wednesday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m. in Jubilee Hall (MBCI), with maestro Daniel Raiskin conducting the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.
