The violinist and longtime director of Tafelmusik has at 71.

“With profound sadness, Tafelmusik joins the music world in mourning the loss of its Music Director Emerita Jeanne Lamon, C.M. O.Ont., who passed away in Victoria, British Columbia, on Sunday, June 20, 2021 at age 71” the renowned baroque orchestra announced on its website.

Born in New York City, she moved to Toronto in 1981 to lead the then recently-formed Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra as its first music director, a position she would hold until 2014.

“It is no exaggeration to say that Tafelmusik would not be the organization it is today without her passionate dedication during her tenure as Music Director,” a post on the official Tafelmusik Facebook page says.

Considered to be “one of the world’s top baroque orchestras” (Gramophone), the famed period ensemble flourished under Lamon’s leadership, passion and dedication to early music.

She is survived by her long-time partner, Tafelmusik cellist Christina Mahler. Tafelmusik plans to announce a special tribute to Jeanne Lamon in the coming weeks.
