On July 27, the day of The Kindness Project, a local organization will hand out bags to those in need.

Rebecca Rummery is the co-founder of Overdose Awareness MB. Her boyfriend passed away due to an overdose.

"I started making kindness bags in 2018 after I lost my boyfriend. I personally would do them throughout the year, around Christmas time, around his birthday. Last year Overdose Awareness MB wanted to start doing it as a whole," says Rummery.

A kindness bag generally contains personal hygiene items and snacks.

"Last year we personalized the bags with who the bags were donated in memory of," which consisted of a name on each bag.

While handing out a kindness bag blesses those receiving, Rummery says it's in a way therapeutic to make them as well.

"Getting together and being able to make them, and do something in your loved-ones memory. All around it's a good experience for our group."

Last year Overdose Awareness MB partnered with an organization called Street Connections, which then gave out the bags on their patrols.

"This year we're packing 32 bags, 16 for females and 16 for males. They'll have toothbrushes, deodorant, snacks, ponchos, anything that someone might need is in the bag."

Rummery's boyfriend often gave back to people in need. Giving away these kindness bags reminds her of him and the joy he spread.

"For me, it's another way to keep his memory alive, and I do it throughout the year. I have them in my car so I can hand them out if I see somebody who could use it. It's been part of the grieving process for me."

The Kindness Project day is officially July 27, therefore the group will be handing them out on Tuesday.

"We always feel it's important to give back to the community. This is one way we feel we can do it."
