Rescue operations are still underway in central Mexico, where an earthquake on Tuesday has claimed more than 250 lives and reduced dozens of buildings to ruins.

Jaime Vargas is a ballet master with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. He is from Mexico City, and says his siblings living there are okay, but some of his friends' homes have been destroyed.

Vargas says people there are working hard, anxious to help each other. He says a raised fist is an indicator for people to be silent.

Vargas says family living two to four hours away from Mexico City also felt the earthquake.

Vargas directs those looking to help out to a GoFundMe campaign by the Mexican Association of Manitoba. They're looking to raise $10,000. So far they've raised more than $5,000.
