Winnipeg's longest skating rink is as big as its going to get this season.

The Forks says the 2018 Red River Mutual Trail build is complete, stretching 7.5 kilometres on the Red and Assiniboine Rivers.

It's the first time since 2009 the trail has been more than 6.5 kilometres long; in '09, it reached beyond 9.3 kilometres.

Although the trail has been open to the public since December 22, growing along the way, today was the official opening, with Mayor Brian Bowman on hand.

"It's really fun to be here... my family has been here several times already and will continue to come out throughout the year," said Bowman.

According to The Forks, it takes about four hours to groom the entire trail using an Olympic Ice Resurfacer, and the ice is 23 to 25 inches thick.
