Manitobans can enjoy a popular festival in person this year in Gimli.

Having people back in person is the "Rúsínan í Pylsuendanum" - raisins on the tail of a hot dog, or the cherry on top, for the  Icelandic Festival. After the previous year of purely remote events, "Islendingadagurinn" is ready for visitors.

The festival will run throughout the August long weekend, starting July 30 at noon and ending August 2 at 4:00 pm.

"We're doing a lot of setup for the events that are many of them are starting tomorrow," Jenna Boholij, President of the festival says. "We have quite a few things going on this weekend actually."

This year's theme is “Icelandic at Heart / Íslenskt Innst Inni."

The sandcastle building contest, a throwing game called fris-nok, and many other events are returning. Events for the 132nd festival will be both on and offline, with some in-person events requiring proof of full vaccination. Some things will be done a bit differently, but the hearing is still there.

"We're trying to do our best to keep everyone safe and keep the event starting smoothly."

Working with Public Health, some events will have limited access. Boholij says to come early to avoid missing out on the fun.
