Although there may be snow in the forecast, spring cleanup has officially begun in Winnipeg.

City crews hit the streets this week, tackling roadways, bridges, sidewalks and pathways. The goal is to have the city's entire street network cleaned up within the next six weeks.

This will be done using more than 300 pieces of equipment operated by around 500 workers.

"We expect to collect between 20-30 thousand tonnes of sand and debris," said City of Winnipeg Manager of Streets Maintenance Michael Cantor.

Cantor says it is important to pay attention to where the street cleanup is taking place.

"The easiest way to do this is to download the Know Your Zone app so you know when we are coming to sweep your street," Cantor explained.

Residents are also reminded to watch out for temporary no parking signage and to avoid parking on the street when it is scheduled for cleaning.
