Today is day two of the Skills Canada National Competition at the RBC Convention Centre.

The event, put on by Skills Canada, lets students in different trades -- ranging from carpentry to auto repair to baking - compete against one another and represent their province.

Shaun Thorson is the CEO of Skills Canada. He says it's important to give these students a place to showcase their abilities.

"These occupations are... strong contributors to the economy, and we feel that a diverse economy or an economy with individuals with diverse skillsets is something very positive. That's why we're very focused on promoting these occupational areas."

Thorson says one of the things they focus on is inviting middle and high school students to learn about trades.

"We think it's important to give students the opportunity to see these types of careers, just so that they're more informed when they're trying to make decisions on what their educational pathway will be."

The winners for each of the more than 40 categories of competition will be announced Saturday night.
