For the second straight year, Winnipeg has made up the largest living Canada flag.

3,158 people gathered at Shaw Park dressed in red and white t-shirts to try and top other cities across the country in the friendly competition. Other cities that made living flags yesterday include Regina, Brandon, Toronto, Calgary, Ottawa and Victoria.

Grant Nazarko is an organizer of the event and was a catalyst in starting it six years ago.

He says it's one of the best ways to celebrate the country.

"We should all celebrate Canada and this is just one way of 'waving the flag' so to speak," said Nazarko. "Is there any other way to demonstrate that you're waving the flag than actually being in the flag?"

"We live in a great country," he continued. "I've done enough world travelling to know we're the envy of everyone in the world."

Nazarko says despite having the largest living flag in the country, he wants it to get even bigger.

"We're building towards 2017 which is Canada's 150th birthday," he said. "We're hoping to get six-thousand people out for that one and maybe we'll do it at Portage and Main."

Since the inaugural event in 2011, over 18,000 Winnipeggers have assembled downtown to create a living Canadian flag. Yesterday's event has brought that total to well over 20,000 people. Attracting young and old, Canadians of every heritage.

For Nazarko, records and big numbers are nice, but he says they're not the most important thing about the living flag.

"I don't look at the numbers too much," said Nazarko. "I'm more focused on everyone coming out, showing their spirit and having a good time.
