There's something in the air this week in Winnipeg: smoke.

A special weather statement is being issued for Winnipeg as heavier air pollution blowing into the city. The smoke from forest fires burning east of Berens River and west of Red Lake is being pushed by northeast winds into Winnipeg, as well as Whiteshell, Bissett, Interlake, and Red River Valley Monday.

"Due to the smoky conditions, individuals living in or travelling to the above-noted areas are advised to be aware of potential health concerns that can be associated with current air conditions. In these current conditions, even healthy individuals may experience sore eyes, tears, coughing and a runny nose," Environment Canada says.

This will continue until Wednesday when it is expected to clear up as winds disperse the smoke to other areas northward.

"People at higher risk include young children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with heart or lung conditions (particularly asthma), and therefore should avoid as much exposure to smoke as possible."

Environment Canada is asking people to stay indoors or move to areas with cleaner air to reduce risk, as well as limit outdoor activities such as exercising. They recommend not using air conditioners or furnaces to avoid pulling the smoke indoors and to avoid burning or smoking other materials.
