On Friday, January  28, 2022, Piero Gamba passed away in New York City.

Born in Rome, Gamba came to attention as a child prodigy on the piano and the podium, making his conducting debut at the age of 8.

Gamba was engaged as music director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra from 1971 until 1980. Over his tenure, many of Gamba’s famous friends travelled to the city to perform alongside the WSO, including pianists Vladimir Ashkenazy and Van Cliburn, violinist Itzhak Perlman, cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal, amongst others.

In 1979, under the direction of maestro Gamba, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra travelled to New York City and made its Carnegie Hall debut.
