Friday night (Nov 14), award winning music conductor Gerard Schwarz will be making his Winnipeg debut leading the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in a program called Schwarz & Copland Third. The American music director is known for championing American composers, past and present so it’s only fitting that he is conducting a Native American classical composition called Fire and Light, as well as John William’s heart rending music from Schindler’s List and of course Aaron Copland’s magnificent Third Symphony with its famous Fanfare for the Common Man.

There are two concerts--Friday and Saturday night (Nov 15 & 16) at 8:00 PM at the Centennial Concert Hall. This is part of the Masterworks Series A.

Gerard Schwarz was Michael Wolch's guest live in studio this past Thursday morning. Watch the interview below!

Winnipeg’s dig! magazine is now in its 10th year of sharing jazz news with readers, and to mark the milestone, they are throwing the 5th annual Rent Party Sunday night (Nov 16) at the Park Theatre. A ‘rent party’ pays the proverbial landlord, so not only will you experience the best jazz this city has to offer, you’ll also be supporting dig! magazine as it continues the news-for-free in the Jazz Capital of Canada.

One of the organizers, jazz educator and amazing vocalist, Anna-Lisa Kirby, dropped by the Classic 107 studio to tell host Neil Coligan all about the event.

The dig! magazine rent party is Sunday night (Nov 16) starting at 6:00 PM at The Park Theatre on Osborne Street. Tickets are $30 at the door. The concert starts at 7:30 PM and will feature the University of Manitoba jazz Orchestra and the U of M jazz Faculty.

Also, Sunday night (Nov 16), Winnipeg’s Westminster Concert Organ Series kicks off its 26th season with the amazing talent of Spanish organist Raúl Prieto Ramirez. Raúl is the first Spanish organist in recent times to establish himself among the elites of the international concert scene. When he was 27, he was appointed as the first Organist in Residence of the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid – Spain’s National Concert Hall. Since Fall of last year, Raul has been a member of Indiana’s Ball State University Music faculty. He also does extensive touring all over the world. I was just watching some of the videos of his concert recitals and he is definitely not your usual organist. He certainly adds flair and excitement to his performances.

Showtime is 7:30 at Westminster United Church. Tickets are $25 and available at McNally Robinson Booksellers or at the door. There is special pricing for seniors and students at the door as well. Tune in to Música Clásica Saturday morning in the 10:00 AM hour when Raúl Ramirez will be live in studio!
