Sea Bears Captain Alex Campbell steps off court, into front office
The Winnipeg Sea Bears didn't have to look far for their new assistant coach and assistant general manager, but stayed in the locker room. Over the past two seasons, veteran guard Alex Campbell has played a big role on the team. It was announced on Thursday that he retired from professional basketball and will step into the new role with the Sea Bears. Campbell is known for his leadership, defence and performance in big moments, which led him to be the Sea Bears captain. The decision to bring Campbell on is the first coaching staff decision made by new GM and Head Coach, Mike Raimbault after taking over the role on August 28. “Alex is a veteran of the league and brings a wealth of experience to his new role with the organization,” said Raimbault to seabears.ca. “He has been a Sea Bear since day one and we are excited to continue supporting him as he steps into his new role on the staff." Campbell has seven years of experience in the Canadian Elite Basketball League and made history in 2024 when he was the first Canadian to reach 1,000 career points. “This game has given me so much, and I’m grateful for every teammate, coach, and fan I’ve met along the way,” said Campbell to seabears.ca. “Winnipeg has become home for me, and I’m honoured to continue giving back to this team and this city in my new role. I’m excited to help build something special here.” Campbell was named 2019 Championship Weekend MVP while playing for the Saskatchewan Rattlers. He sits fifth all-time in both points and steals in the CEBL.
