Winnipeg police taser suspect after violent assault on elderly couple
A pair of seniors are in hospital after a random assault Saturday evening. Winnipeg police say an 80-year-old woman and an 85-year-old man were walking in the 300 block of Elgin Avenue when a man who was reported to be running in and out of traffic, ran up to the elderly woman and pushed her to the ground. The 85-year-old man attempted to intervene, but was punched in the face causing him to fall to the ground. The woman tried to stand up but was also punched in the face. The assault continued with both being punched and stomped on while they were on the ground. About five minutes after the incident, officers witnessed the suspect run intona home in the 300 block of Elgin Avenue. Officers entered the home and quickly located the suspect who was immediately uncooperative. Officers were forced to use their tasers to subdue the man and take him into custody. Both victims were transported to hospital, one in stable condition and the other in unstable condition, with non-life-threatening but serious injuries. Officers later learned the suspect was wanted on a warrant of apprehension and suspension of parole. The 28-year-old suspect is facing a long list of charges including Aggravated Assault x 2. He remains in custody.
