Classic 107 - Winnipeg's classical and jazz radio station.

Join Intermezzo host Chris Wolf in 1pm hour of his show as he features performances by Polish virtuoso Krystian Zimerman.

In celebration of his upcoming 60th birthday, pianist Krystian Zimerman returned to the studio for a solo recording of the Schubert piano sonatas D 959 and D 960. As Zimerman confesses in an interview found in the liner notes, he has played piano sonatas of Schubert for some 30 years though in that time he has not recorded them because – like late Beethoven sonatas – he has always “feared them tremendously because of [his] unbelievable respect for the composers.”

Born in Zabrze, Poland, Zimerman’s career was launched when he won the 1975 Warsaw International Chopin Piano Competition. He performed around the world with some of the most renowned orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic (lead by Herbert von Karajan), the Vienna Philharmonic (directed by Leonard Berstein), the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (with Kyrill Kondrashin) and the Boston Symphony Orchestra (lead by Seiji Ozawa).

Zimerman enjoys an exclusive lifelong contract on the Deutsche Grammophon label and this 2017 release of late Franz Schubert sonatas will bookend the 1 o’clock hour of the Intermezzo feature.
