Prodigy is an advanced program of study for singers attending Miles Macdonell Collegiate who may be contemplating a professional performance career in music. It was founded in 1983 and initially was in the form of a rhythm section, horns and singers. After a number of years Prodigy evolved to a vocal ensemble which it remains to present day. Occasionally an instrumental student of stellar quality is invited to be a member of the ensemble. The program is rigorous, robust and dynamic in its approach to developing the technique, skill and knowledge necessary to succeed, both emotionally and artistically in a challenging musical arts career.

Each year up to 10 students are selected from an open audition process. Their training encompasses, vocal technique, ear training, improvising, study of various musical styles, ensemble technique, solo technique, recording studio session work, stage technique, music business, public appearance and of course live performance(with instruments and a cappella). All performance material is composed or custom arranged for Prodigy. Additionally, Prodigy is the house group for the Mighty Mac Studio. Students from the music production courses have the opportunity to have their compositions performed by Prodigy and/or recorded. Prodigy has performed hundreds of shows over the years from concert halls, radio, television, national/ international, and most importantly in support of our local community. A particular highlight was a main stage guest performance for Queen Elizabeth II at her Gala Golden Jubilee Concert with tens of thousands of people in attendance and broadcast nationally. A number of Prodigy members have moved on to successful careers in music which encompass, Sony Music Canada, EMI Canada, Broadway, Opera, Humber College, independent producers and engineers who have worked on Grammy nominated projects, outstanding music directors and educators, choreographer, and singer/songwriters.
