Ten-thousand of the fittest firefighters and police officers will be competing in Winnipeg six years from now.

Winnipeg will host the World Police and Fire Games in 2023.

Police and firefighter athletes from approximately 70 countries will take part.

Chad Swayze is a firefighter from Winnipeg who is currently competing in this year's games in Los Angeles. He's also a co-chair on the Winnipeg bid committee.

He says the games mean a lot to the athletes.

Swayze says they're asking the city for $2-million to put on the games, and says it will cost around $14-million in total. But he says with athletes and their families coming to the city for upwards of two weeks, we could be looking at an economic impact of $90-100-million for the province.

Winnipeg beat out San Diego and Adelaide, Australia, which were also on the short list to host in 2023.
