Members of the University of Manitoba Bisons women's hockey team were each given Outstanding Achievement Awards at City Hall today by Mayor Brian Bowman, in recognition of winning this year's U Sports national championship.

Venla Hovi, who is also an Olympic bronze medallist, said the whole city's been recognizing them in different ways since they won.

"Now being here with the whole team, it's amazing," she said.

Hovi got an extra goodie basket from the mayor, which included some local favourites like Old Dutch chips and kielbasa. Bowman said it was in response to Hovi jokingly asking him for gift cards and Jets tickets on social media.

"I tweeted it. It was a full-on joke... it was actually pretty funny how many replies I got on that. Yeah, I thought about it on the way here, I was wondering if he was going to bring it up here. I'm glad he did, it was really funny," said Hovi.

The U Sports championship win is the first ever for a Bisons women's hockey team. The team defeated the Western Mustangs 2-0 on March 18th to claim the title.
