On-street parking fees are going up $1.50 an hour as of April 1st.

The City of Winnipeg says the full changeover will take about 6-8 weeks because each pay station needs to be reprogrammed manually. The city says you'll know if new rates are in effect by the rate card on the pay station. A temporary sticker will also be on upgraded machines, showing the new price. The PayByPhone app will charge the old price up until all pay stations are updated, so for the first 6-8 weeks, even if you're parking at an updated machine, you'll pay the lower rate if you pay by app.

The city says drivers with unused scratch and park meter passes can bring them to the Winnipeg Parking Authority office at 495 Portage Ave. and pay the difference to exchange them for updated passes. Lower rate passes will be valid until June 1st.

April 1st will also mark a change in the early payment discount for parking offences. Paying a parking fine early will, as of April 1st, only remove 25 per cent of the fine, down from 50.
