A recall on select types of fire extinguishers dating back to the 1970s has been expanded.

The recall involves two styles of Kidde-brand and Garrison-brand fire extinguishers: plastic handle fire extinguishers and push-button pindicator fire extinguishers. The expanded recall includes fire extinguishers not mentioned in previous recalls in 2009 and 2015. Apparently, the extinguisher can become clogged and may require excessive force to discharge, or may not work at all; in addition, the nozzle may detach and become a projectile.

The plastic handle fire extinguishers are red, white or silver and are either ABC- or BC-rated. The models affected can date back to January 1, 1973 up to August 15, 2017. The push-button pindicator fire extinguishers have a push-buttom design and are red or white with a red or black nozzle. They were produced between August 11, 1995 and September 22, 2017.

Approximately, a combined 2.7 million units of the fire extinguishers were sold in Canada.

The full list of model numbers and dates affected in the recall can be found on the Government of Canada website.

If you have one of the recalled models, Health Canada tells consumers to immediately contact Kidde to request a free replacement and for instructions on how to return the recalled unit.
