Donald Street outside Bell MTS Place will be the scene of a big party Wednesday afternoon and evening, so plan ahead if you're driving in the area.

From noon Wednesday to 1 Thursday morning, Donald Street will be closed to traffic from Portage to Graham to make way for a Winnipeg Jets playoff street party. The closure allows for set-up, the party itself, and take down.

Ken Allen is a communications officer with the City of Winnipeg.

"It's definitely busy in that part of town and for that street party it's going to be even busier, so we're recommending that motorists who are headed south can use Main Street as an alternative route, another one would be Osborne Street, and then further west you can use Sherbrook/Maryland," says Allen.

Some Winnipeg bus routes and bus stops on Graham Avenue will be temporarily rerouted and relocated due to the street party.

Kevin Donnelly, senior VP with True North Sports & Entertainment, says they're hoping for 5-10,000 people at the street party over the course of Wednesday and Friday's games.

"We're excited, every department is excited," says Donnelly. He also says it's Bring Your Own Lawn Chair.

It's a 4:30 start for the party tomorrow. The City of Winnipeg will be providing traffic updates on the Waze app. Winnipeg Police public information officer Constable Tammy Skrabek says people will have to stay tuned as far as how things will end up working, and it may be a minute-by-minute play as people show up.

"If there are any unanticipated closures or we find that it's a larger group than we anticipated and we have to close more streets, we're just going to have to announce it on the fly," says Skrabek.

Skrabek says Winnipeggers are mostly respectful, but if people get out of hand there are police on standby. She says there isn't a designated number of police officers who will be at the event.

"We really can't have a number yet because we don't know what it's going to look like. So we're hoping that Wednesday we have a good crowd; if we do, we know that Friday we'll have a much larger crowd and then we'll need a few extra police resources. Everything on paper so far looks to be covered," says Skrabek.

The Jets open their 2018 playoff run against the Minnesota Wild tomorrow at 6pm at Bell MTS Place.
