True North Sports & Entertainment and Economic Development Winnipeg are making a few tweaks to the Winnipeg Whiteout Street Party.

Economic Development Winnipeg President and CEO Dayna Spiring says there were no major issues, but they are going to make some changes after they heard from fans and discussed it internally this morning.

“We debriefed on everything we saw and what could have gone better and we’re going to do this again tomorrow night so we’re expanding the street party,” Spiring said at Bell MTS Place this afternoon. “Yesterday we had one block from Portage to Donald, tomorrow we’re going to expand another block down Donald to St. Mary and we’re going to add a family zone that’s alcohol free at Millennium Library Park for families with young children.”

Spiring said yesterday’s street party had a capacity for 6,000 people and they believe the maximum amount of people they had there at once was 5,500. She also says throughout the entire night they estimate 9,000 people made their way through the street party at different times.

She says they heard from fans that more space was needed, as people stood shoulder-to-shoulder most of the night. She says to mitigate that, they are going to add smaller screens to other areas of the party in an effort to spread the crowd out.

True North Senior Vice-President of Venues and Entertainment, Kevin Donnelly said there will be two more large viewing screens added to the party, one on Donald St. facing York Ave. and one at the family zone.

“These are just minor changes,” Donnelly said. “It looked so great on TV and we’ve received comments from across the country and they’re wishing us the best so we definitely think it was a success.”

Donnelly says they are contemplating having the street party for away games later in the series but haven’t finalized any plans.

Winnipeg Police Service Inspector Nick Paulet is the Event Commander and Planner for the street party.

He said there were no major issues Wednesday night from a police standpoint, but with tomorrow’s game taking place on a Friday, they will increase the number of officers.

“It’s important for us to be prepared for an unpredictable crowd size,” Paulet said.

The Winnipeg Jets will try to take a 2-0 series lead in tomorrow’s game two. Puck drop is at 6:30 p.m. at Bell MTS Place.

After tomorrow’s game, the series will shift to St. Paul, Minnesota for games three and four.
